NSU SHSS held ‘Undergraduate Colloquium Series Summer 2026’ . North South University’s (NSU) School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) successfully hosted the ‘NSU SHSS Undergraduate Colloquium Series Summer 2026’ on 29 June 2026 at the SHSS Conference Room.

The colloquium brought together faculty members, students, academics, and researchers in a vibrant academic setting. The event featured paper presentations by three undergraduate students from different departments of SHSS: Nishat Ahmed from the Department of English and Modern Languages; Wasit Zawad Ismam from the Department of Law; and Arian Sarwar from the Department of Media, Communication, and Journalism (MCJ).

The programme was graced by Prof. Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of North South University, as the Special Guest. Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Professor and Chair of the Department of Law, attended the session as the Honourable Discussant.

The event was moderated by Zeba Farah Haque, Lecturer, Department of Law, who opened the proceedings with an introductory address and guided the session.

In his welcome speech, Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, Professor of Law and Dean of SHSS, congratulated the presenters and encouraged them to continue their intellectual pursuits. He emphasised the importance of original research in shaping students’ future academic and professional development.

The first presentation was delivered by Nishat Ahmed on the topic ‘Between What is Said and What is Meant: Grice’s Maxims in Interview Discourse’. Her paper explored how speakers observe, bend, or flout Grice’s conversational maxims in public interviews, revealing deeper meanings, emotions, and power dynamics in communication.

Wasit Zawad Ismam presented the second paper, titled Identification of Double Jeopardy as a General Principle of International Law’. His presentation examined the principle of protection against double jeopardy, and analysed its recognition as a general principle of international law.

The third presentation was delivered by Arian Sarwar on ‘Activism, Art, and Administration: A Critical Policy Analysis of Film Governance in Bangladesh’. His paper critically examined the governance of film in Bangladesh, focusing on creative freedom, state regulation, OTT platforms, institutional challenges, and the need for policy reform.

Following the presentations, a lively question-and-answer session allowed students, faculty members, and other attendees to engage with the presenters and reflect on the broader relevance of their research.

As the discussant, Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed provided constructive feedback on the papers, engaging with their methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and policy implications. In the end, Prof. Nasar U. Ahmed commended the presenters for their academic rigour and highlighted the importance of such platforms for the professional and intellectual development of undergraduate students.

The event ended with the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to the presenters in recognition of their valuable contributions to the colloquium.
