NSU Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla Elected Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. North South University (NSU) Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla, Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, has been elected as a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS), in recognition of his significant contributions to scientific research, particularly in mathematics, computational fluid dynamics, and high-performance computing.
Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla joined North South University in September 2011. He served as the Research Coordinator of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (SEPS), and now leads the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) research group.
He was an Associate Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, having been inducted in 2019. His election as a Fellow reflects his sustained contributions to scientific research and academic excellence in Bangladesh and internationally.
In this connection, NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “Congratulations to Professor Mamun for being elected as a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. It marks another significant milestone in his academic career as well as for North South University. We hope this honor will further inspire him to advance research and contribute to scientific excellence.”
Professor Molla’s research focuses on computational fluid dynamics and high-performance computing, with particular interests in boundary-layer and turbulent flows, Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), hybrid RANS/LES techniques, natural and mixed convection flows, and the lattice Boltzmann method using GPU-based computing. His work also encompasses computational blood flow and parallel computing using MPI, OpenMP, and GPU technologies.
He completed his BSc (Honours) in Mathematics and MSc in Applied Mathematics at the University of Dhaka, and earned an MPhil in Mathematics from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He began his academic career as a Lecturer in Mathematics at BUET.
In 2005, Professor Molla received the Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) to pursue a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics at the University of Glasgow, UK, which he completed in July 2009. He subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational Fluid Dynamics and high-performance parallel computing at the University of Manitoba, Canada, from October 2009 to August 2011.
Expressing his gratitude, Professor Molla said, “I am deeply honored by this recognition, which inspires me to pursue further research and contribute to the advancement of science and education in Bangladesh.”
In Google Scholar, Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla has earned almost 3,900 citations. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, he received the NSU Research Excellence Award in both 2021 and 2023. In 2025, Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla was listed among the top 2% of scientists in the world by Stanford University.
With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conference proceedings, Professor Molla has made substantial contributions to his field and has presented his research at numerous conferences at home and abroad.
